Why Smoking is so Bad For You
Our bodies rely on healthy food, clean water and fresh air to function well and to be healthy. If we fail to get any of these things, then our bodies will not be as happy with us, and we will not be at our healthiest best. We make bad choices for ourselves everyday. We drink too much beer at a party, or we eat too much or we eat the wrong things. Or sometimes we do all of the above all at one time. Those are occasional things. But millions of people do something even worse, and they do it several times each and every day of their lives. They smoke.
Smoking can decrease your appetite, which some would say is a good thing, but it can also decrease your sex drive. Supposedly, (at least according to smokers) it calms you down when you are feeling stressed, but research shows that smoking actually increases heart rate and raises the blood pressure. It also causes heart stress as more and more of the small blood vessels of the body are constricted, forcing the heart to work harder and harder. All of this additional work and stress on the heart can lead to coronary disease or stroke. The constricted blood flow also leads to poor circulation in the extremities which will not only lead to death cold feet, it may lead to a more serious problem such as a lack of sensation. If you cannot feel them as well, you might injure your foot and then allow the injury to go untreated until it is so bad that you need hospital care.
Smoking makes men impotent and women not care that they are. Decreased blood flow means everywhere, including the genitals in both sexes. Without blood flow, a man cannot get or sustain an erection and a woman will not feel the arousal that will trigger natural lubrication. Sex should be a part of a healthy adults life unless there is a religious or other reason for them to remain celibate.
Smoking contains so many known poisons that it would make you queasy just to see them listed. Included on that list is the compound known as Polonium-210. If that sounds vaguely familiar to you, let me refresh your memory. Polonium-210 is the poison which was used to murder a Russian spy in 2006. Kind of makes you think, huh?
Of course, looking or smelling good is not as important as staying healthy, but you will do none of those if you continue to smoke. Not only will you not be healthy, you will stink from the smoke. The smell will be in your hair, your clothing and your house. Your breath will reek of it. There will be no getting rid of the smell. Your face will wrinkle and your skin will take on a dingy, sallow look. Your nails and teeth will stain a nasty yellow and you will develop wrinkles all around your mouth. It is sad really.
Smoking is bad for you, that is the bottom line. There is no justifying it, or minimizing it. You can not be just “kind of a smoker” no more than you can be just kind of a murderer or a kind of pregnant. Light up once a week or once an hour, it is all the same. Every cigarette you smoke could be the one that will ultimately be your last, one way or another.
